Howard Smith, captain of the Standard Chartered Asian Cavaliers is certain that his team is as fit as they can possibly be, despite the long haul for 10 of his team members,  freshly flown in from Nairobi. The one weakness and the only segment of their fitness that was untried and untested, is their flexibility and ultimately their agility.

His solution was to call up the STRETCH team to see if they could squeeze over 1000 pounds of flesh and bones all at once into their Stretch studio down in Wyndham street prior to their first training session on terra firma HK.

One of the team members (Cherry) who plays Centre hobbled into the studio with a bruised Vastis lateralis (outer Quad) from a recent heavy tackle. His Happy Valley training was to start in 4 hours time!

Could we do anything to rehab this acidic, rigor mortis-like tree-hunk of a quad?     We could always use the jack hammer on him!

We first measured his leg length. His right leg was an inch shorter! No wonder his right hamstrings were screaming. We attempted to effleurage his right quad, but even that was too painful!

What to do?

We did what we do best. Launch him into an Active Assisted Isolated Stretching protocol for his limbs and lower body.  When we started he had negative 10 degrees of hip extension which caused him to over use his quads. No wonder they felt like concrete.

An hour later after opening his hip flexors and both attachments of his thighs he had a full 15 degrees of hip extension and absolutely no resistance to report of and more importantly no pain!! All the other beaming team members left us saying Geez, when are you guys are coming over to Nairobi to show us the rest of those stretches?  Remember active stretching works really well for any active sport and should be done as a warm-up as part of your prehab programme.
