Some people may turn their noses up at the smell and the taste of the pressed juices of cereal grasses such as Wheat, Oats and Barley. But, ounce for ounce, these concentrated green foods contain more chlorophyll, minerals and phyto-nutrients than any green vegetable equivalent. Out of the 102 minerals found in soil, there are 90 minerals found in cereal grasses alone. The high levels of vegetable proteins and easily digestible carbohydrates and easily absorbed vitamins, make them an essential dietary supplement to boost your immunity. Who in Hong Kong doesn’t need to boost theirs? Barley and Wheat grass and the Blue Green Algae plants are rich in chlorophyll which gives the food its green color. It is the plant’s equivalent of human blood with the exception that it has less iron to turn it red and more magnesium at its core. Chlorophyll inhibits bacterial and micro-organism growth and cleanses our vital organs such as our livers which are constantly being overloaded. On the PH scale, these alkaline grasses are around 7.8, so drinking them will help your body to remove excess acidity which is one of the main causes of inflammatory responses and in turn, pain! Remember inflammation thrives in an acidic environment! The chlorella in the plants helps to prevent the growth of tumors as their glyco-proteins and the enzyme P4D1 enhances the migration of killer T-cells to the sites of the tumors. One major benefit with Chlorella and chlorophyll is the way it binds to heavy metals and dioxins helping to eliminate them from the body. It helps to increase peristalsis in the large intestine, relieving constipation and normalizing the secretion of digestive acids. One other benefit of this alkalizing element, is the de-odorizing of the gastro intestinal tract, helping to improve the taste and smell of one’s breath. Anti-oxidant rich chlorella reduces high blood pressure lowers LDL cholesterol and accelerates wound healing. The hard to obtain vitamin B12 (for releasing energy) with all their co-factors assisting absorption are also found in cereal grasses. Here are some of the other free-radical busters found in these grasses; betacarotene, vitamin C, vitamin E succinate, and superoxide dimutase (SOD).
As health care professionals, we are always being asked what we can do to boost our immunity and protect us from the free-radical ravages of the air pollution. Drinking these super greens twice a day is the least you can do for you and your family. The cost per day per person is less than HK$ 15. You take one tablespoon in a glass of water in the morning and one at night so your body can absorb the nutrients whilst you are asleep.
